External Laboratory Integrations

I led the integration project that automated the processes running with external laboratories.

The problem it solves

Tests that cannot be performed in the hospital are sent to an external laboratory. When that flow is handled by hand, nobody can tell where a sample is or when the result will come back — an invisible gap for the waiting patient and for the clinician alike.

What it offers

• External laboratory processes were automated
• The flow of samples and results can be followed in the system

Technical approach

The integration was built between the external laboratories’ own systems and the hospital’s laboratory information system. Defining one shared flow instead of a separate method per laboratory means the process does not have to be built again when work begins with a new one.

What changed

• The flow of samples and results was accelerated
• Manual tracking disappeared
